Elementary Curriculum
The elementary instructional framework provides the opportunity for flexible teaching, learning, and
selection of instructional formats to meet the needs of all students in the classroom. Students work in
small groups, cooperatively, and independently. To support student synthesis of information and
application to real world experiences, teachers are encouraged to integrate content across the curriculum.
The language arts program focuses on literacy skills through the development of reading, writing,
speaking and listening. The mathematics program focuses on development of fact fluency, number
sense, and effective problem solving skills. Responsible citizenship is taught through the social studies
program. Students study the social, economic, and political systems that support and shape a
democratic way of life. The six standards for science are the foundation for the science program.
Instruction is based on an inquiry approach that engages students in investigations designed to stimulate
their curiosity. Elementary students also study the basic concepts of the arts, media, physical education,
and health.
